— The West Milford Organic Community Garden is celebrating its eighth season with an opening day event on Sunday, May 18, at Apple Acres farm and orchard.

Join the group from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for food, music, and an introduction to the garden. Two Pond Farm of West Milford and Midsummer Farm of Warwick will have regionally appropriate organic seedlings for sale. Garden members will also be continuing work preparing and planting.

The garden is animated by organic principles and practices. Gardeners use no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Instead, for fertility they use compost, manure, organic lime and other inputs, and for pest control, natural methods like proper nutrition, plants which attract beneficial insects and repel harmful ones, organic repellents, companion planting, and various other ways of working with nature.

Ongoing garden projects include the Ample Harvest food pantry program; improving the composting program by relocating the piles and constructing wooden compartments for them; installing a solar pump to fill the water barrels; sandbagging for flood control; and seed saving.

The garden is a cooperative effort, where experienced veterans and enthusiastic new gardeners work together to share knowledge and solve problems and ensure that members have the most fun and fruitful gardening season possible, with all possible benefits to the community.

There are still a few plots open. Contact Russ Bangs at fdutch@aol.com to reserve a plot.
