Two men were arrested last week and charged with burglary and drug-related offenses after being caught removing copper from homes on Riverside Road in the Upper Greenwood Lake section of the township.

David G. Corcoran, 32, of Hewitt, and Adam J. Hazan, 44, of Bergenfield were found hiding in the basement of a second residence by police on Wednesday, May 7, after a call from a neighbor who said two men were taking copper from an unoccupied residence on the block. The caller provided a license plate number and description of the vehicle. Police located the empty vehicle in the vicinity of a second unoccupied home also on Riverside Road. Police Det./Sgt. Stephen Singerline, Officer Stephen Herzog and Det. Frank Elia located the suspects in the basement. Police report the two had already cut out a significant amount of copper piping and fixtures. They were taken into custody without incident.

Corcoran and Hazan were each charged with burglary, theft of moveable property, possession of burglar tools, possession of hypodermic syringes.

Hazan was also charged with possession of a prescription legend drug.

Both men were sent to Passaic County Jail in default of $25,000 full cash bail.

"The West Milford Township Police Department is reminding residents to remain vigilant and contact the Police Department regarding suspicious persons or incidents due to the increase in burglaries to vacant or unoccupied residences," the police said in their statement.
