The township's Community Services and Recreation Department is offering music and theater camps this summer for kids.

Instrument Camp at Hillcrest Community Center

Research shows that music aids brain development, makes students smarter and helps them get better grades in school. This camp is designed to introduce children to three popular instruments: the piano, the guitar and the violin in a fun and low pressure environment. They will learn note reading, proper posture, basic right and left hand fingering and playing techniques on all three instruments at more than 70 percent off the price of private lessons. Most importantly, is to let the children find their talent and passion towards one instrument so they can further their playing in the future. Instruments are provided to the children to use during the camp.

This is for kids in grades 1 through 6; July 21 to 25, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; cost is $136 per camper if enrolled by July 9, $146 after July 9. ($10 additional for non-residents).

Summer Arts at West Milford High School auditorium

Students will be singing, dancing and acting in preparation for a one-hour production to be presented on the last day of camp.

Doug Heyburn, the director of Choral Music at West Milford High School, and Maria Calabrese Heyburn, veteran of six Broadway shows, will run the camp.

This camp is for students entering grades 6 through 10 in the fall; July 7 to July 18, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The show is on July 18. Cost is $211 per camper (non residents add $10).
