WEST MILFORD — After being tabled four times, it is unclear if an ordinance to set employee job titles and pay ranges will be introduced at the next Township of West Milford Council meeting on Wednesday, May 23.
At the last meeting of the council, the officials had a heated debate about the salaries and the report of the meeting in The Messenger resulted in heated comments in the online publication of the story.
The council has delayed action on the employee ordinance until they receive the results of an outside firm's efficiency study commissioned by the council. It will cost the township $65,000.
However, Mayor Bettina Bieri and Administrator Antoinette Battaglia say that the council has all information needed to introduce the salary ordinance for discussion.
The ordinance would first have been discussed in a public hearing and then been up for a vote by the council on Wednesday — had it been introduced at the last meeting.
The proposal listed job titles and the minimum and maximum pay range for each.
The published list included the following job titles and annual compensation ranges:
Township mayor: $5,348 to $5,800
Township councilmembers: $4,754 to $5,200
Township administrator: $26,000 to $160,000
Director of Community Services and Recreation: $55,000 to $120,000
Director of Finance: $55,000 to $112,000
Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police: $137,500 to $158,000
Director of Public Works: $55,000 to $116,000
Court Administrator: $45,000 to $96,000
Township clerk: $55,000 to $100,500
Director of Health/Health Officer (2016): $80,000 to $94,000
Director of Health/Health Officer (2017): $80,000 to $97,500
Director of Health/Health Officer (2018): $80,000 to $99,000
Director of Health/Health Officer (2019): $80,000 to $100,000
Construction official: $45,000 to $106,000

The proposed ordinance would have taken effect 20 days after it was passed the council voted to do so after holding a public hearing following the introduction.
