HOBOKEN — Dr. Monika M. Heinig received her Ph.D. in mathematics in February 2016 from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, under the advisement of Dr. Charlie Suffel.
Heinig, the daughter of Carl and Barbara Heinig of Hewitt, graduated from West Milford High School in 2005 and, upon graduation, attended Seton Hall University where she had double majored in both mathematics and secondary education.
Immediately after her undergraduate study, she received her master of science degree in applied mathematics in May 2011 from Stevens Institute of Technology.
After a brief career as an actuary, she went back to Stevens to pursue her Ph.D. where she worked as a teaching assistant. During her tenure, she was an adjunct professor at both Seton Hall and Stevens.
Since 2008, Heinig has co-authored five journal publications in the field of graph theory and presented at numerous math conferences. She is currently working in a research laboratory within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and is using graph analysis to study the neurological impairments of patients with multiple sclerosis using Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
