Steven J. Vermeulen

Steven J. Vermeulen of Newfoundland went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 with his family by his side. He was 77.
He was born on Oct. 27, 1939 in Paterson to Johanna (nee Hartog) and Nicholas J. Vermeulen.
Steven proudly served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1964.
He married Maryann (nee Keselica) in 1966 and together they raised their three children in Newfoundland.
Steven worked for over 35 years as a refrigeration mechanic at Heerema Refrigeration Company in North Haledon. He retired in 2004 and worked with his son, Steven, as a plumber.
He was a member of the Community Church of Smoke Rise in Kinnelon, where he took part in Bible study and also served as an Elder. Steven also volunteered for a few years at the New York Rescue Mission.
He was an artist, enjoying calligraphy and watercolor painting. He will best be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a humble Christian who faithfully served his Lord.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Maryann, in 2015, and his brothers Dennis and Nicholas Vermeulen.
Steven is survived by his loving children, Christine M. Dittrick, Steven N. Vermeulen and his wife Erin, and Brian Vermeulen; his cherished grandchildren Frankie, Natalie, and Leah; his dear brother Jerry Vermeulen and his wife Sandra of Mahwah; and his dear sister Linda Foster and her husband Barry of Indiana; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Stickle-Soltesz Funeral Home, 187 La Rue Road, Newfoundland. The funeral service will take place on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Immediately following the funeral service, Steven will be interred beside his wife in Fair Lawn Cemetery in Fair Lawn.
