WEST MILFORD — The West Milford School District will be hosting programs on the subject of cyberbullying. The informational program for students will be held during school hours; another session of the program for parents will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m.
What is cyberbullying?
According to the website stopbullying.gov, cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology, and that includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.
About the presentation
Melissa Straub of Without a Trace Investigations will be the guest speaker for the presentations. According to the company's website, www.withoutatraceinvestigations.com, Without a Trace Investigations is a private investigation agency that specializes in social media investigations including cybercrime, cyberbullying, sexting, and other social networking issues. The company also provides consulting services relevant to current social media trends and recommendations based on current regulations and school based polices.
The program for parents will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 10 in the Macopin Middle School caféteria at 7 p.m.
The district encourages parents to attend this informational seminar, as incidents of cyberbullying are on the rise in concurrence with the increase of access and use of social media sites by children; and at younger ages than ever before.
