Dr. Lee Greenberg, who has joined the West Milford practice of Dr. Allen S. Kirk, earned his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
As an undergrad, he wasn't sure what he wanted to do, but while shadowing practitioners in different specialties, he encountered an athletic trainer who was also a podiatrist.
"Once I saw what he did, I was hooked on podiatry," he said.
The specialty afforded him the opportunity to work with an extensive patient pool and help general patients, athletes and diabetics.
Greenberg attended New York College of Podiatric Medicine and did his residency at Long Island Jewish Hospital and North Shore University Hospital. Greenberg worked at a large wound care center and trained with nationally recognized podiatrists. His training involved over 4,000 surgeries that included everything from standard bunion and hammer toe corrections to ankle fractures and complex trauma; Greenberg was first assistant in over 75 percent of those surgeries.
As one of his rotations during his residency, he worked with the Athletic Department team podiatrist for Fordham University. While there, he participated in biomechanical exams on the majority of the athletes at the school. As a result of these exams, they were able to predict which athletes might be subject to sports-related injuries.
"Patient education is important and knowing that you can be pre-disposed to an injury can eliminate it from occurring in the first place," Greenberg said. "Early prevention programs can help athletes avoid injury."
The practice treats every kind of podiatric problem or condition. Greenberg has extensive professional experience with athletes and sports injuries. They have a diabetic shoe program that is covered by most insurance, and custom made-foot orthotics.
The practice provides in-hospital management with Chilton Medical Center, including wound care, diabetic foot care, and surgical evaluation.
Greenberg is very happy to be working with Kirk, who has been in practice for 30 years. He noted that they will learn from each other.
Greenberg grew up in Paramus and lives in Mahwah. He has fond memories of playing baseball in West Milford with a travel league. He remembered how beautiful West Milford was, and is happy to be back.
The people are inclusive and hard working," he said. "In my two months here, everyone's been very welcoming."
