Bagel Bonanza held a grand opening celebration at their new store at 2915 Route 23 South in Newfoundland last Friday, with West Milford Mayor Bettina Bieri performing a ribbon cutting and welcoming the new store to the township.
Owner Mahmoud Abdel greeted new customers with a smile and invited them to try some free food samples, while his co-owner and cousin, Chef Hosam “Sam” Abdalla, manned the kitchen.
Abdel has been a business owner for over 20 years in the United States and 20 years prior to that in Egypt, starting at the tender age of 10. He now owns several stores and companies including a convenience store supply and beverage Distribution company in Franklin Lakes. He and “Chef Sam” hope to expand their Bagel Bonanza franchise nationwide in the future.
According to their website, Abdalla began his culinary career in 1989. He began reinventing traditional American dishes not long after, making a splash in New jersey and eventually across the country. He created more than 40 varieties of bagel flavors, probably best known for his popular "French Toast" and :Waffle" bagels in 1998.
Abdalla completed the pastry training at the International Culinary Institute in 2013. In 2014, he made his New York debut as owner and head chef at "The Corner Cafe" on West 24th St. and Avenue of the Americas in Chelsea.
"There are no shortcuts in making great bagels. They must be handmade, using the finest ingredients, hand-rolled, boiled, and baked in order to achieve perfection," said Abdalla.
The cousins are excited to bring Bagel Bonanza to Newfoundland, Abdel said.
“West Milford is a nice town,” he added.
