Marshall Hill School travels back in time

As the school year comes to a close, one event students and staff had to look forward to was the time capsule event held every 10 years. On June 14, Marshall Hill School unearthed a time capsule that was buried in 2006, and replaced it with two new ones; one to be retrieved in another 10 years, the other in 20 years. Along with the entire school, retired teachers, and alumni were invited to attend and relive some past memories.
The day began with an introduction by sixth grader Seamus McGuinness, followed by the pledge of allegiance and the singing of the star spangled banner. As the capsule was being dug up, students took turns coming up to describe the memories they were leaving in their capsule for themselves to discover in 2026. Putting these in the time capsule and burying it would allow their future selves to be reminded of their elementary school days as well as what life had been like in 2016.
Once the buried time capsule had been uncovered, students from 2006 gathered around and, one by one, began to bring back pieces of their young, sixth-grader selves. Among the contents were objects, pictures, and written pieces; the first being a list of kindergarten students that year. Following that was a hackey sack, one class’s favorite book (Trouble Don’t Last), a list of student council members, their sixth grade graduation song, and the Marshall Hill Times newspaper.
From the time capsule, students learned that the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling was a big part of their lives, with only six of the seven books written at that time. Now that’s a blast from the past!
In the end, student council members assisted in burying their own capsule as well as planting a new tree for the school. Hopefully, we will see them all again in 10 years, but for now, they will leave elementary school believing that “Marshall Hill Eagles will soar,” just as the class of 2006 had 10 years earlier.
