Seven black-and-whites find homes on Black Cat Friday

— There were a lot of “happy penguin feet” leaving the West Milford Animal Shelter last Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the shelter’s Black Cat Friday and Weekend adoption event. Anyone who adopted a black (mini-panther) or black and white (four-legged penguin) cat or kitten received a special black cat t-shirt. And all adopters received a special pet gift bag and entry into a free raffle for a $20 ShopRite gift certificate.

The score was: four-legged penguins 7, cats/kittens of other colors 7 and mini-panthers 0. While no purely black cats were adopted, the event was a great success. Many people came in to adopt, visit and drop-off donations. The lucky cats/kittens who were adopted: Pandora, a special needs cat with limited sight, Thing 1 and 2 (two kittens adopted together), Lizzie, a three-legged cat, Lucy, Twister, Hurricane, Marley, Tinkerbell, Tiki, Lassie, Booties the office cat, Onyx, the biggest cat at more than 20 pounds and Tulip, a young cat with limited sight in one eye. The gift certificate was won by Mike, who adopted Twister.

The “mini-panthers” are still hopeful they and all the other cats, kittens and dogs at the shelter will find new homes and families soon.

To help them find homes, the shelter will be having a "Home for the New Year" adoption event for the month of December. Anyone who adopts during the month will receive a special pet “swag bag” and entry into a raffle for a chance to win one of five gift certificates.

There are many excellent pets waiting for homes at the shelter. Bringing a new pet into your home and family is a big decision and responsibility. There are Web sites and publications to help you choose the pet that is right for you and the volunteers at the West Milford Animal Shelter can be very helpful with any questions or concerns you may have.
