The environment. Searching for a better bag

Wakefern Food Corporation has become part of the Consortium to Reinvent the Retail Bag and its Beyond the Bag Initiative, a collective effort that aims to create a more consumer-friendly, sustainable retail bag.

Beyond the Bag is a three-year effort to create sustainable and cost-effective retail bag solutions. The initiative brings together major retailers as Consortium Partners, including founding partners CVS, Target and Walmart, alongside other partners including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Dollar General, Kroger, Albertsons Companies, Hy-Vee, Meijer and Walgreens.

Wakefern, whose supermarket banners already carry a variety of reusable bags, looks forward to discovering even better, more sustainable designs for a better bag at checkout. The corporation comprises nearly 50 member families who own and operate 363 supermarkets under the ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market banners in the Northeast.

“For more than four decades, Wakefern has supported sustainability through efforts such as recycling plastic bags and other materials, reducing food waste, and implementing energy efficient technology at our retail and distribution centers,” said Karen Meleta, Wakefern’s chief communications officer. “We believe the best bag is a reusable bag.”
