Two Pond Farm offers workshops
WEST MILFORD. A workshop on organic vegetable gardening Saturday, April 1 is designed for those who have gardened for awhile and want to increase their knowledge.
Two Pond Farm, a small farm at 176 Weaver Road in West Milford, is showing signs of spring.
The farm, owned by Allison and Roger Knight, has been an organic farm since 1976.
“After such a mild winter, spring is just around the corner and I read it is supposed to be a warm, wet one,” she said. “Our parsley, pepper and eggplant seedlings are up and tomato and lettuce seeds were started yesterday. We just ordered the few seeds we purchase.”
The garden layouts are done, “and I can’t wait to get my hands in the soil.”
The farm is home to about 100 laying hens for eggs.
The couple raises a small flock of Dorset and Romey sheep for lamb’s wool. They also raise chickens and pigs.
The five pigs are raised for meat, and so far, they are all sold.
Allison said 25 chicks are expected to arrive in early May and another 25 in June so they will have chicken for sale beginning in mid-July.
The farm has a store and offers workshops in organic gardening and farming.
After not giving classes for many years, Allison and Judy DeJosia are returning to teaching.
The next organic vegetable gardening workshop is Saturday, April 1. It is designed for those who have gardened for awhile and want to increase their knowledge.
Areas to be covered are soil and composting, crop rotation, succession planting and companion plants.
Workshops start at 9:30 a.m. with registration and a light breakfast treat. The class starts at 10 a.m.
Tuition is $80 a person. Advanced registration is required because each workshop is limited to 10 people. Send an email to ahosford@juno.com
The first two workshops, held in February and March, addressed organic vegetable gardening. They were aimed at beginning gardeners and were sold out.
