For 20 years, Read Across America has been celebrated on March 2, which is the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, was an American writer and cartoonist best known for his children's books written under the pen name, Dr. Seuss. He used rhyme and whimsical use of nonsense to make his books effective tools for teaching children skills they need to be successful readers.
That tradition continued at West Milford schools last week when board of education members and district administrators visited elementary school classrooms to share the gift of reading with the young students.
Board of education President Jim Foody, along with his colleagues trustees Steve Drew, Will Cytowicz and Nicole Fritz, made the rounds to the elementary schools reading to the children.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alex Anemone and former Westbrook principal Dr. Joan Oberer also made the rounds.
The event is sponsored by the National Education Association to build a nation of readers year-round, showing them that reading is fun. Read Across America motivates children and teens to be curious and read.
And, as Dr. Seuss wrote, "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read with a child."
