WEST MILFORD — All are invited to West Milford's Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday May 27.
Beginning at 10 a.m., the West Milford High School Highlander Band performs patriotic music.
The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. Glenn R. Wenzel, president of the West Milford Veterans Council, is the master of ceremonies again this year. Following the invocation, Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, the roll call of the war dead and 9/11 victims is heard. A moving presentation by the West Milford police Department to the Gold Star mothers will take place. Comments from Mayor Bettina Bieri and the rededication of the Veterans Monument follow.
Immediately following the ceremony, the parade will form in front of Town Hall and proceed down Union Valley Road, Marshall Hill Road and onto Lincoln Avenue to the American Legion. At the Legion, refreshments are offered, care of the township and the Legion. Hot dogs, snacks and refreshments are free for all.
Before heading out to the Memorial Day ceremony, you might want to help soldiers who are overseas. American Legion chaplain Don Webb, who is also a photographer for the Messenger, is asking that residents might consider bringing an item to donate to servicemen and women. Webb has set up a collection box at the American Legion. He suggests bags or cans of coffee, toiletries, including tooth brushes and toothpaste, small bars of soap, sunscreen, Ziplock bags, socks, feminine products, Chapstick, nuts and insect repellent, to name a few. Webb sends supplies monthly to West Milford residents who are serving. Anyone wanting to get their relative on the list, see Webb at the Legion or email him at chaplain289@aol.com.
