West Milford — Long-time West Milford resident and member of the West Milford First Aid Squad, Elfrieda Liebenstein, was remembered on Saturday at a well-attended service at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Hewitt. Liebenstein, 78, passed away on Dec. 11. According to Jack Cronen of the West Milford First Aid Squad, Liebenstein was a wife, mother, grandmother, West Milford business woman and a 35-year member of the squad. “She was the sweetest person,” he said. She joined the West Milford First Aid Squad in 1973 and because her business hours allowed it, she consistently pulled more duty hours than necessary to fulfill her obligation. “She was sometimes on duty from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday,” Cronen said. Always very active within the squad, she was a trustee, served on numerous committees and was also chief instructor at West Milford First Aid Squad, keeping watch over the 60-plus squad members’ training. Still a member of the squad at the time of her passing, she will be remembered as a can-do personality, always ready to take on any kind of extra work, calling in to offer herself for extra shifts. “She would do things and then fade into the background. Just get the job done then disappear into the crowd,” Cronen recalled. Family and friends were joined at the service by emergency workers from the West Milford First Aid Squad, Upper Greenwood Lake First Aid Squad, the northern area vice-president and the district chairman of the 17th District of the New Jersey State First Aid Council, Chilton Memorial paramedics, Ringwood, Pompton Lakes and Wayne First Aid Squad members and members of the West Milford Police Department and volunteer fire companies.
