West Milford Trish Gindler was checking out exercise studios about two years ago when she happened to stop in to Andrea Powers Wellness Studio. She was a stay-at-home mom at the time and wanted to find a yoga program that would work for her schedule. She found not only a schedule that worked for her, but a program that has helped many learn the benefits of yoga in exchange for time. Gindler became one of the first participants in Powers’ Karma Yoga program, a program where, in exchange for some light office work or babysitting, participants can enjoy unlimited yoga classes and the benefits they offer for both the mind and body. “I was checking out the studio and Andrea told me about the program,” said Gindler, who has been a student and volunteer at the studio for two years now. “I agreed to babysit in the nursery in exchange for unlimited classes in the studio.” Gindler said it’s the best of all worlds for her. She now works locally and can get to the studio most times of the day. But the studio offers such a wide schedule of classes, she said, it is convenient for anyone. Karma Yoga has a simple premise: You give and in return you will receive. Powers said the agreement is not a casual one. It is a true commitment. And, Gindler said, if you are unable to work at your assigned time, it is your responsibility to swap with another volunteer. “In exchange for the volunteer time, you receive free, unlimited classes, anytime of the day,” said Gindler. It is very similar to getting a paying job. After being interviewed by Powers, if both parties agree, a contract is signed for the Karma Yoga program, covering six months. In exchange for light office work or babysitting, folks who sign on may attend unlimited yoga classes at the studio. “It’s really quite lovely,” said Gindler. “It really allows people the wonderful experience of yoga who may not be able to afford it.” Currently, there are about a dozen participants in the Karma Yoga program. It works for both Powers and the participants. “This is a good opportunity for workers and stay-at-home moms,” said Gindler, “since there are classes at all times of the day.” And Gindler has high praise for the atmosphere of the Andrea Powers Wellness Studio. “More people need to know what a wonderful experience yoga is for both the mind and the body,” said Gindler. “Andrea and her husband, John, are wonderful. They provide a comfortable, nice, warm environment here.” For more information on the Karma Yoga program at Andrea Powers Wellness Studio, contact her at 973-728-1486 or go online at www.andreapowers.com.
