West Milford The West Milford Health Department will be holding a blood-screening program called the “S.M.A.C Test,” Sequential Multiple and Analysis Test. Registration will take place on Monday, March 28, and Tuesday, March 29 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at the West Milford Township Meeting Room. The actual blood test date is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Town Hall Meeting Room for residents 16 years and older. Legal guardian and or parent must register minors and must be present during testing. Minor test results must be sent to a medical doctor. The test is comprised of a computerized analysis of a mandatory 12-hour fasting blood sample. The S.M.A.C. test results may alert you and your physician of a health problem. This test contains several studies including a complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry. The cardiac profile includes testing for LDL and HDL. These results are generated into a formula called CHD Risk ratio. This ratio analyses your risk of having a cardiac problem. The test results may also indicate problems with anemia, high blood sugar or high blood cholesterol. The health department is also offering the Hemoglobin A-1-C, a blood test used to diagnose diabetes. The Hemoglobin A-1-C shows the average blood sugar level for three months. The testing for the Hemoglobin A-1-C is optional and is a separate application. Another blood test offered is the Cardiac Highly Sensitive CRP; this is an indicator of inflammation in the body. This test is an indicator related to levels of cardiac risk. High levels of this test indicated increased risk of a heart attack. According to Harvard Women’s Health Study these results were more accurate in predicting heart problems than cholesterol levels.
