This week we take five with Collin MacDonald. Be sure to look here next week for our next Take Five! Name: Collin MacDonald Age: 17 School affiliation: West Milford High School Sport/Activity (ies): Ice hockey 1) How did you get involved in hockey? My dad got my brother and I involved when he introduced us to the sport when I was four or five years old. I loved it from the day i learned about it and had a passion ever since. My parents continued to allow me to stay involved by taking me to clinics, practices, and then I began to play on a team. 2) What is the most challenging part about playing the sport? The most challenging part about playing ice hockey is dedication. I know every sport involves extreme dedication, but ice hockey involves more than most people realize. The time that goes into ice hockey will spin your head around. I haven't played any other organized sport since the fourth grade. This is because i live for the game, and I play all year around. I'm at the rink 5 to 7 days a week, and don't forget the rink isn't just down the road. It's definitely a challenge for myself and family to manage the time we do in order to play ice hockey, but it's worth every second. 3) What is your favorite class in school and why? My favorite class in high school is definitely gym class. It is a class that you can have fun, be semi-competitive, and get a good grade in pretty easily. 4) Describe what being a Highlander means to you. I've looked forward to being a highlander since I was in elementary school. In and out of school I carry around highlander pride. What I like most about being a highlander is that I am living the best days of my life with great kids around me. West Milford High School has not only guided me to success in academics and athletics, it's allowed me to build great relationships with fellow highlanders. 5) What is your favorite song? My favorite song is Wonderwall by Oasis Bonus five 1) What is it like to play at such odd hours? What's funny about ice hockey is when your really young you have games at 5 am, and then as you get older the times just start getting pushed back. Now I'm seventeen and I have practice until 10 30 or later in some cases. I can't even imagine what time I'll be skating at age 30. 2) Share a favorite moment with your team OFF the ice? Not one specific moment, but all the times on the bus on the way to and from games and practices with the team. Out of all the bus rides I've been on with the team there's been something hilarious happen every time. That's what high school is all about, having fun with your friends and being able to laugh harder when you look back on the experiences. 3) What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie is Miracle. Its about the miraculous story of the 1980 Olympic ice hockey team and how they defeated the Soviet Union in the semi-final round. 4) Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration is my older brother. He graduated last year from West Milford High School, and also was the captain of the hockey team. I've learned from him my entire life and he's taught me a lot. On and off the ice he's a leader, and without him I wouldn't be who I am today. 5) What is your favorite food? Perogies are my favorite food. Do you know someone who should be featured in Take Five? Drop us a line at webmaster@strausnews.com and let us know who and why.
