To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest advancement rank in scouting, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in the area of leadership, community service and outdoor skills. While there are many options available to demonstrate proficiency in these areas, a number of specific skills are required to advance through the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. To advance, a Boy Scout must pass specific tasks, which are organized by requirements and merit badges. Merit badges signify the mastery of certain scout-craft skills, as well as serving to increase skills in areas of personal interest. Of the more than 150 merit badges available, 21 must be earned to qualify for Eagle Scout. For the rank of Eagle Scout, the boys carried out the following community service project: building an outdoor classroom for the West Milford Township High School. The project was started on April 22, 2007 and completed on August 7, 2007. With the help of Norma Bozenmayer, Chemistry teacher at the West Milford High School and advisor for the high school’s environmental club, Tom designed the classroom, acquired all approvals, solicited donations from local businesses, and supervised a crew of approximately 20 scouts and parents for his project. Mrs. Bozenmayer also received a grant from the West Milford Education Foundation to supplement the cost of the project. The project included clearing the site of all debris, digging holes for all cement footings, assembling and installing six 6-foot benches and a 6’x10’ platform. Tom said he chose this project because he felt it was a great contribution to the high school and could be enjoyed by many students and teachers. It is estimated that the project had over 267 hours of community service.
