Since 1999, the Monthly Blood Drive in West Milford has worked with many social and civic organizations to promote frequent blood donations. In most cases, one group would sponsor a month and do what they could to promote participation. The September Monthly Blood Drive on Sunday, Sept. 18 will break the mold (again) by having three civic minded organizations with many missions, but one common goalto encourage blood donors to roll up their sleeves again. "We saw a unique opportunity to participate," said Doctor Eric Lauer, President of the Greenwood Lake Animal Hospital on Union Valley Road in Hewitt. "We are offering a $5 coupon for services at the GLAH to any donor at the Monthly Blood Drives in September. The donor can also choose to donate their coupon to the West Milford Animal Shelter, which cares for sick and stray animals. Either way, it is our way of giving back to the community that we live in and serve." In addition, donors are urged to bring used toner cartridges as the Monthly Blood Drive is an official collection point for the West Milford Lions. The Lions return the empty cartridges to an organization that pays them for each cartridge. The money realized from these sales is used to support the Lions' campaign to help blind and visually impaired children, including their annual summer camp for the blind. "So, in effect, if a donor simply brings a toner cartridge to the September Monthly Blood Drive they could make a contribution to three great causes in one day!" explained Co-chairman Kevin Gilligan. "Plus, we have great gifts from our sponsors for our donors as a way of saying, thanks for donating.'"
