When I was growing up in Iowa in the 50’s and 60’s patriotism was a happy feeling. There was a sense of real gratitude for all we had as a country.
I have learned as an adult that these blessings are not shared equally. The violence and struggle of the 60’s left a permanent mark on me.
Through it all there was a sense that we had prevailed together as a people. We agreed on the basic “rules” of democracy.
Today it seems we have abandoned those rules. Hate, fear and lies have become primary motivators in our public discourse. Surely, this isn’t what any of us want.
If you are one of the many people who says Joe Biden didn’t win the last presidential election, I’m asking you to stop and think of what you are really saying.
It’s the same thing as when my seven year old grandson and I play Monopoly and he decides, mid-game, to change the rules because he’s losing.
Changing the rules because you didn’t win isn’t the way life works. Every credible source affirms that the election results were valid and that Joe Biden won.
Don’t be fooled by the lies. Consider the sources of your information. Look for more media outlets than just the ones that say what you want to hear.
Then, after weighing the evidence and facts carefully, make a judgment.
This doesn’t mean you lost. It means you care about our country and want it to continue, imperfect as it is.
Whether it’s Monopoly, baseball or life, rules matter. And so does the truth.
